Embossing & Debossing

Relief detail created two ways: moulded directly into glass or plastic during forming, or pressed into paperboard with a die. Moulded relief is permanent and adds no material cost per unit once tooled.

Embossing & Debossing applied to cosmetic packaging

Why brands use it

  • Tactile brand recognition without ink
  • Permanent marking that cannot wear off a container
  • Combines with foil for a raised metallic effect on cartons

  2. 02ToolingMould engraving for containers; brass or magnesium die for board.
  3. 03SamplingRelief depth and legibility approved on a physical sample.

Typical applications

  • Logo on bottle shoulder
  • Base marking and capacity marks
  • Carton front-panel relief
  • Cap top detailing

MOQ considerations

On containers, embossing is part of the mould, so it belongs to the tooling decision. On cartons, only a die is needed, making it accessible at low volumes.

Lead time

Carton dies 5–8 days; container engraving follows the mould schedule.

Embossing & Debossing FAQ

Not into an existing stock mould — the relief has to be engraved into the mould itself. On a stock shape we would use screen printing or hot stamping instead, or plan the emboss into a future custom mould.

Typically 0.3–1.0mm depending on board weight. Deeper relief risks cracking the coating or laminate, which we test on the actual board before production.

Yes — standard samples, decoration samples and pre-production samples. Standard samples are usually available quickly; customised samples are quoted with the project because they require set-up.

Yes, through masterbatch resin colour, spray coating on glass or plastic, or printed colour on cartons. Coating gives full Pantone freedom at a lower minimum; masterbatch is more durable but needs a larger volume.
