Lotion Packaging: Pump Bottles and Dispensing Systems

Lotion packaging is a dispensing problem before it is a design problem. Too small an output frustrates the user; too large wastes product and shortens the perceived life of the pack.

Lotion Packaging formats for beauty brands

Short answer

Lotions are packed in 100ml–500ml pump bottles in PET, HDPE or glass. The critical specification is pump output — typically 0.3ml to 1.0ml per stroke depending on viscosity — together with dip tube length and a lockable head for shipping.

What decides the pack

Four variables account for most of the specification. Get these right and the rest is design.

Common formats

  • 100ml pump bottle
  • 200ml PCR-HDPE pump bottle
  • 150ml glass pump bottle
  • 300ml body lotion bottle

Output rating

Thin lotions dispense well at 0.3–0.5ml, richer emulsions need 0.5–1.0ml with a wider orifice.

Residual product

Dip tube length and base geometry determine how much lotion is unreachable. Cutting the tube to the bottle's real depth reduces waste and complaints.

Transit locking

Lockable pumps prevent actuation in parcels and hold luggage — a small cost that removes a common leak claim.

Material economics

At 200ml and above, resin choice and PCR content drive unit cost more than decoration.

Lotion Packaging FAQ

Usually a mismatch between formula viscosity and pump output, or particulates in the formula. Moving to a larger orifice, a higher output rating or a filtered fill typically resolves it.

Specify the dip tube to the actual internal depth, use a base with a shallow well rather than a deep punt, and consider an airless system for high-value formulas.

It depends on the specification. Stock containers with labelling start low; custom colour, decoration and moulds raise the minimum. For custom paper boxes the standard minimum order quantity is 5,000 pieces per design, and selected paper box projects may start from a few hundred pieces subject to evaluation of the structure, material, printing method and finishing. Send the item and target quantity and we will quote the real minimum for that exact configuration rather than a generic figure.

Yes — standard samples, decoration samples and pre-production samples. Standard samples are usually available quickly; customised samples are quoted with the project because they require set-up.

Yes, through masterbatch resin colour, spray coating on glass or plastic, or printed colour on cartons. Coating gives full Pantone freedom at a lower minimum; masterbatch is more durable but needs a larger volume.
